Chapter Thirteen

Days following the death of Dante seemed to drag by. Between mourning the death of her only son, Aria had to continue to nurse Vincent back to health once he was released from the hospital, even though it was the last thing she wanted to do. She didn’t get the chance to just sit back and grieve. No one seemed to respect her loss since her door had become more of a revolving door than usual. She had to deal with visits from Families all over who arrived to give her kind words, the UPS deliveries that came every day in the form of sympathy cards, flowers, and loads of money. Aria was appreciative of the support she was getting from the other Families, the wives in particular, but what she wanted most was peace to deal with her emotions. That chance never came.

Before she realized it the day, of Dante’s funeral had come, and it seemed to have come quicker than any of the Graziani family members wanted it to. They dreaded losing Dante. Although death wasn’t foreign, there was something about losing the boss’s son who was also the youngest member of The Family that had them all in a horrible space. No one’s pain could even began to be compared to what Aria was feeling. In her mind, she had failed her son and his blood was on her hands. Unfortunately for her, she and Vincent weren’t in the space where he was supportive or the shoulder she needed. Since the day that they’d identified Dante’s body, Vincent hadn’t spoken a single word to her. You would think that the day that they had to bury their child, things would have been different, but they weren’t.

“Ma, our ride is here,” Isabella said from the doorway of Aria’s bedroom. She had Carina holstered on her right hip and looked as if she was trying her hardest to keep from going over the edge.

Bella and Dante’s relationship was beyond rocky, but she loved her brother nonetheless. They’d decided on different paths in life and didn’t see eye to eye, but it didn’t change that they were bound by blood. It definitely didn’t change the aching feeling Bella had in her heart and the pit of her stomach. Even though she was with Noah the night Dante was killed, she still couldn’t help but blame him a bit, which added even more pain, since she truly did love him.

“I’m coming, Bella,” Aria somberly said.

She slowly stood from the edge of her bed and adjusted the bottom of her Roberto Cavalli dress before taking steps in Isabella’s direction.

“Ma, you know that you can ride with dad. I really don’t mind. I’m sure you two need each other right now.”

Vincent blamed Isabella wholeheartedly for what had happened to Dante, but he wouldn’t say so outright. Actions spoke much louder than words and his was shouting. At first, he insisted to Aria that Bella not show up for Dante’s services. Aria wasn’t having that.
